Version 60 — Formatted emails (September 25, 2026)
Your merge emails can now look like real emails, not plain text.
- Bold, italic, underline and text color.
- Fonts and sizes: 11 fonts (the same list Gmail offers) and any size from 6 to 96 pt.
- Links, bulleted lists and numbered lists.
- Pictures in the email body: add one with the Image button or paste it in. The picture goes where your cursor is. Large pictures are shrunk to at most 1200 pixels on the long side so emails stay light; the limit is 2 MB per picture and 5 MB per email.
- Paste from Word, Google Docs or another email and keep the formatting: fonts, sizes, colors, bold, links, bullets and headings, including Word’s usual Calibri and Aptos text. Numbered items keep the numbers you typed. If a recipient doesn’t have a font, their email shows a close standard font instead.
- Every email now carries a formatted version and a plain-text version, so long paragraphs can wrap to fit the reader’s screen.
Safer sending
- If an attachment can’t be found, that person’s email isn’t sent without it. Mail Merge tells you which row and why, and everyone else’s email still goes out.
- If your sheet changes after you preview, Mail Merge asks you to preview again before sending, so what you saw is what goes out.
- A picture copied out of a Gmail message is flagged before you send. It’s only a private Gmail link, which your recipients may not be able to see. Mail Merge shows how to add the picture properly.
Good to know
- Tables pasted in arrive as plain lines for now.
- Signed into several Google accounts at once? Use Mail Merge in a Chrome profile where your sending account is the only (or the first) account signed in.
- Already had Mail Merge open during the update? Close the Mail Merge panel in Gmail and open it again to get the new version.
